Best Time to Visit Annapurna Circuit
Discover the ideal seasons for trekking the Annapurna Circuit — from rhododendron blooms to clear mountain views.
The Annapurna Circuit is one of Nepal's most iconic treks, circling the Annapurna massif and crossing the Thorong La Pass (5,416m). Choosing the right season is crucial for safety and enjoyment.
## Spring (March to May)
Spring is one of the two peak trekking seasons in the Annapurna region. The weather is stable, temperatures are moderate, and the trails are adorned with vibrant rhododendron forests in full bloom. Visibility is excellent, offering panoramic views of Annapurna I (8,091m), Dhaulagiri (8,167m), and Machhapuchhre (6,993m). Days are warm at lower elevations, but it remains cold at higher altitudes and the pass. March can still have snow at Thorong La, so check conditions before departing.
## Autumn (September to November)
Autumn is widely considered the best time for the Annapurna Circuit. After the monsoon, the air is clear and crisp, providing the most spectacular mountain views of the year. The skies are generally blue, and the temperatures are comfortable for trekking. September can have some lingering monsoon rain, but by October conditions are ideal. This is also the busiest season, so book teahouses and flights in advance.
## Winter (December to February)
Winter trekking is possible but challenging. Snowfall can block Thorong La Pass, and many teahouses at higher elevations close. Daytime temperatures are cold, and nights are bitter. However, the trails are quiet, and the snow-covered landscapes are stunning. Only experienced trekkers with proper cold-weather gear should attempt the circuit in winter. Always check pass conditions with local authorities before departing.
## Summer/Monsoon (June to August)
The monsoon season brings heavy rainfall, leeches on the trail, and clouded mountain views. Landslides can block sections of the trail, particularly around the Marsyangdi River valley. However, the Annapurna Circuit lies in the rain shadow of the Himalayas, so the upper sections (Manang and beyond) receive significantly less rain. Trekkers who enjoy solitude and don't mind getting wet can still have a rewarding experience, but it is not recommended for first-time trekkers.
## Recommendation
For the best balance of weather, views, and trail conditions, plan your Annapurna Circuit trek for October or late April to early May. These windows offer the highest probability of clear skies and safe pass crossings.
