Overview

The Annapurna I Base Camp Trek, also known as the North Annapurna Base Camp or Narchyang Trail, is a short but adventurous route to the north face of Annapurna I (8,091 m), the first 8,000-metre peak ever climbed. Starting from Narchyang near Tatopani in Myagdi district, the trail follows the Myagdi River through rhododendron forests, waterfalls and the remote Panchakunda (five sacred lakes) before reaching the base camp at 4,190 m. Unlike the crowded Annapurna Sanctuary route, this is a quiet camping trek with raw alpine scenery and very few other trekkers.

Day to Day Itinerary

Leave Pokhara early for a scenic 4 to 5-hour drive along the Kali Gandaki River through Beni to Narchyang village in Myagdi. Spend the afternoon exploring this traditional Magar village, its waterfall and terraced fields, and meet the guide and porters before the trek begins.

A steady 5 to 6-hour climb out of the Myagdi Valley, crossing suspension bridges and passing the Narchyang waterfall before reaching Humkhola, the last road head. Continue through oak and rhododendron forest to the meadow of Sadhi Kharka, a quiet campsite with views back down the valley.

An early start for the hardest day of the trek. Climb onto open alpine slopes and reach Panchakunda, a group of five glacial lakes considered sacred by local communities. From the lakes it is a short climb to Annapurna I Base Camp, where the immense north face of Annapurna I and the surrounding glacier come into full view. Overnight in tents beside the base camp.

Wake early for sunrise on the north face of Annapurna I, then begin the long descent. Retrace the trail past the Panchakunda lakes and Sadhi Kharka to Humkhola, where a jeep waits to drive you down to Tatopani. In the evening, soak in the natural hot springs beside the Kali Gandaki River.

After breakfast, drive back to Pokhara along the Kali Gandaki and Beni road, a journey of about 5 to 6 hours. The afternoon is free to rest and celebrate the completion of the trek.

Nar Phu Valley Trek
Challenging

The Nar Phu Valley Trek is a restricted-area adventure into two hidden Tibetan-influenced valleys north of the Annapurna Circuit. Opened to foreign trekkers only in 2002, the route leaves the Marsyangdi Valley at Koto and enters a narrow gorge leading to Meta, Kyang and the medieval stone villages of Phu and Nar. The trail then crosses the Kang La (5,320 m) to Ngawal and Manang before continuing over Thorong La (5,416 m) to Muktinath. Expect ancient monasteries, mani walls, yak pastures, dramatic rock formations and some of the wildest scenery in Nepal, with very few other trekkers.
