Overview
The Nar Phu Valley Trek is a restricted-area adventure into two hidden Tibetan-influenced valleys north of the Annapurna Circuit. Opened to foreign trekkers only in 2002, the route leaves the Marsyangdi Valley at Koto and enters a narrow gorge leading to Meta, Kyang and the medieval stone villages of Phu and Nar. The trail then crosses the Kang La (5,320 m) to Ngawal and Manang before continuing over Thorong La (5,416 m) to Muktinath. Expect ancient monasteries, mani walls, yak pastures, dramatic rock formations and some of the wildest scenery in Nepal, with very few other trekkers.
Day to Day
Itinerary
A long but spectacular drive from Pokhara through Besisahar and the Marsyangdi Valley to Koto, the gateway to the Nar Phu restricted area. Overnight in a tea house and complete the permit formalities.
Enter the restricted valley through a narrow forested gorge above the Nar Khola. The trail climbs steadily past waterfalls and cliff-side paths to the Tibetan-style settlement of Meta, with the first views of Kang Guru and Pisang Peak.
A shorter day through juniper and rhododendron forest and open yak pastures. Kyang is a small herders' settlement surrounded by dramatic cliffs and dry alpine slopes.
Follow the Phu Khola through a stark high-altitude desert of carved cliffs and riverbeds, passing chortens and mani walls, to the fortified village of Phu. Explore the old stone lanes and Tashi Lhakhang Monastery in the afternoon.
A rest day to adjust to the altitude. Take a short hike to a viewpoint for Himlung Himal and Pokharkan, visit the monastery and learn about the village's Tibetan heritage.
Descend along the Phu Khola through dry riverbeds and highland meadows, then branch west to Nar Phedi, a small Buddhist nunnery at the foot of the climb to Nar. The nuns serve simple vegetarian meals.
A steady two to three-hour climb past painted chortens and stone gates to Nar village, the larger and livelier of the two valley settlements, with clustered stone houses and an active monastic life.
Rest and explore Nar before the high pass. Wander the alleys, visit the monastery and hike to a nearby viewpoint for Pisang Himal and Kang Guru. Prepare gear for Kang La tomorrow.
The most demanding day of the trek. Climb before dawn over rocky ridges and scree to Kang La, where prayer flags mark the pass and the panorama opens to Annapurna II, Gangapurna, Tilicho Peak and Pisang Peak. A long descent leads to Ngawal on the Annapurna Circuit.
A gentle three to four-hour walk down the Marsyangdi Valley, passing Braga and its cliff-side monastery, with views of Annapurna III and Gangapurna Lake, to the bustling village of Manang.
Leave Manang and climb through alpine grassland and juniper to Yak Kharka, a small cluster of teahouses used by herders and trekkers heading for Thorong La.
A short, steady climb across scree and the Jarsang Khola to Thorong Phedi, the last stop below the pass. Rest, hydrate and prepare for an early start.
Start before dawn and climb to Thorong La, the highest point of the trek and one of the highest trekking passes in the world. Descend into Mustang and reach the sacred pilgrimage site of Muktinath.
Walk or drive down to Jomsom, then fly or drive back to Pokhara. The afternoon is free to rest after the trek.

Annapurna Circuit is one of the best trekking trails in the world in terms of its outstanding scenery. This trail lies in the northwestern Himalayas of Nepal. Annapurna Circuit Trek is also called Annapurna Round trekking because it circles the Annapurna massif. The trek offers an amazing panorama of snowy Mt. Manaslu (8187 m), Mt. Annapurna, Mt. Hiunchuli, Mt. Gangapurna, Mt. Nilgiri, Mt. Dhaulagiri, and many other Himalayan peaks. The highest point of the Annapurna Circuit is the Thorong La (5416m), considered the longest mountain pass in the world.
Annapurna Base Camp Trek is a popular moderate trekking trail in the Annapurna region of Nepal. Annapurna Base Camp is one of the best options for trekking because it offers a fascinating view of mountains arranged in a way that forms a loop. Also known as Annapurna Sanctuary trekking, it is the most celebrated trekking holiday package in Nepal. The trail includes Ghorepani, Poon Hill, and Ghandruk, offering diverse terrains, culture, and wildlife.
Mohare Trek is a community-based eco-trek in the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri region. This off-the-beaten-path trek offers stunning mountain views, authentic village experiences, and the chance to stay in Rajkumar's home village of Tikot. Perfect for those seeking a quieter, more culturally immersive trekking experience.
The Annapurna I Base Camp Trek, also known as the North Annapurna Base Camp or Narchyang Trail, is a short but adventurous route to the north face of Annapurna I (8,091 m), the first 8,000-metre peak ever climbed. Starting from Narchyang near Tatopani in Myagdi district, the trail follows the Myagdi River through rhododendron forests, waterfalls and the remote Panchakunda (five sacred lakes) before reaching the base camp at 4,190 m. Unlike the crowded Annapurna Sanctuary route, this is a quiet camping trek with raw alpine scenery and very few other trekkers.
