Overview

The Langtang Valley Trek is the closest Himalayan trek to Kathmandu, reaching deep into a glacial valley beneath Langtang Lirung (7,227 m) on the border with Tibet. The route follows the Bhote Koshi and Langtang Khola through oak, bamboo and rhododendron forest, passing Tamang villages that rebuilt after the 2015 earthquake. The highlight is Kyanjin Gompa (3,870 m), a monastery and cheese factory surrounded by peaks, with a day hike to Tserko Ri (4,984 m) for a sweeping panorama of Langtang, Ganesh Himal and the Tibetan ranges.

Day to Day Itinerary

A seven to eight-hour drive northwest of Kathmandu through Trishuli and Dhunche, with views of Ganesh Himal and Langtang Lirung, to the trailhead village of Syabrubesi.

Follow the Langtang Khola through subtropical forest, crossing suspension bridges and passing the hot springs at Tatopani, to the small settlement of Lama Hotel.

Climb through rhododendron and bamboo forest past Ghodatabela and Thangshyap to Langtang Village, rebuilt after the 2015 earthquake and surrounded by yak pastures and mani walls.

A shorter walk up the valley past watermills and yak pastures to Kyanjin Gompa, with the Langtang Lirung glacier and icefall filling the head of the valley. Visit the monastery and cheese factory in the afternoon.

A demanding five to six-hour round trip to Tserko Ri, the highest point of the trek, for a 360-degree panorama of Langtang Lirung, Langtang Ri, Ganesh Himal and the Tibetan border peaks. Return to Kyanjin Gompa for the night.

Retrace the trail down the valley through Langtang Village and Thangshyap to Lama Hotel.

A final day of downhill walking through forest and across suspension bridges back to Syabrubesi.

Drive back to Kathmandu along the Trishuli River, arriving in the afternoon.

Annapurna I Base Camp Trek
Challenging

The Annapurna I Base Camp Trek, also known as the North Annapurna Base Camp or Narchyang Trail, is a short but adventurous route to the north face of Annapurna I (8,091 m), the first 8,000-metre peak ever climbed. Starting from Narchyang near Tatopani in Myagdi district, the trail follows the Myagdi River through rhododendron forests, waterfalls and the remote Panchakunda (five sacred lakes) before reaching the base camp at 4,190 m. Unlike the crowded Annapurna Sanctuary route, this is a quiet camping trek with raw alpine scenery and very few other trekkers.
