Overview

The Mohare Khopra Danda Trek combines two of the finest community-run viewpoints in the Annapurna region into one off-the-beaten-path adventure. Starting from Galeshwor, the route climbs through the villages of Banskharka, Nangi, Mohare Danda, Tikot, Khibang and Swanta before reaching Khopra Danda (3,660 m) on the flank of Annapurna South. An optional day hike climbs to the sacred Khayar Lake at about 4,660 m. The trek is famous for its community lodges, Magar and Gurung culture and close-up views of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna, with far fewer trekkers than Poon Hill or Annapurna Base Camp.

Day to Day Itinerary

Drive from Pokhara to Beni and Galeshwor, then walk across the Kali Gandaki and up to Banskharka village. Settle into the community homestay and enjoy a local welcome dinner.

Trek through forest to Danda Kateri for lunch, then continue to Nangi, the pioneering community village founded around Mahabir Pun's rural development projects.

Climb to Hampal Danda for a packed lunch and follow the ridge to Mohare Danda. Enjoy a panoramic sunset over the Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and Manaslu ranges.

Sunrise on the ridge, then a long descent through rhododendron and oak forest to the Pun Magar village of Tikot. The afternoon is free to explore the village and its farms.

A four-hour walk along the ridge to Khibang, with views of Annapurna South and the Kali Gandaki valley. Lunch is served at the community dining hall.

Walk down to Shikha and cross the Ghar Khola before climbing to Swanta, a quiet Magar village surrounded by terraced fields. Register your ACAP permit at the Shikha check post.

Climb through forest on the north side of the valley, crossing the Dhasta Khore stream, to the small community lodges of Chistibang.

A short but steep three-hour climb through rocky terrain brings you to Khopra Danda, one of the best viewpoints in Nepal, standing directly opposite Annapurna South with Dhaulagiri to the west.

A demanding but rewarding 8 to 9-hour round trip to the sacred Khayar Barahi Lake, passing yak pastures and prayer sites below Annapurna South. Return to Khopra Danda for the night.

Descend through rhododendron forest to Paudwar, a large Pun Magar village known as the gateway to Khayar Barahi Temple and for its yak cheese.

Walk down to the Kali Gandaki, soak in the hot springs at Tatopani and then drive back to Pokhara along the river road.

Annapurna I Base Camp Trek
Challenging

The Annapurna I Base Camp Trek, also known as the North Annapurna Base Camp or Narchyang Trail, is a short but adventurous route to the north face of Annapurna I (8,091 m), the first 8,000-metre peak ever climbed. Starting from Narchyang near Tatopani in Myagdi district, the trail follows the Myagdi River through rhododendron forests, waterfalls and the remote Panchakunda (five sacred lakes) before reaching the base camp at 4,190 m. Unlike the crowded Annapurna Sanctuary route, this is a quiet camping trek with raw alpine scenery and very few other trekkers.
